ADVENTURES IN TRAVEL: "How NOT to Travel Light"
(
Travel Tips from Bob Killorin - of Bob's Scuba)

First of all, our friend Bob has probably never traveled light in his entire life. Now is no time to start. In these dark days of lowlife terrorists & dedicated airport security, how difficult is it to travel with two underwater scooters that just happen to closely resemble small tactical nukes? You will have to ask Bob that one!

Bob Killorin

Photos above and at right show our intrepid adventures, Bob & Walt, at deco stops following a deep dive at Red Slave.

"Tactical nukes" in tow...

COMIC RELIEF: Let's go take some photos for the web site!

Or, things not to do on a Sunday afternoon with your partner. No matter how badly you need photos for the web site....

Mary, you are wearing a rebreather. Why - oh - why are there bubbles in my photo of you diving on a rebreather? Can't you tell when I am planning to take the shot?
Bad timing!

HOW TO "SHOOT A BAG": <or, air embolism simplified>

Learning to deploy a lift bag correctly requires a bit of skill & careful planning, if one wishes to avoid a serious amount of frustration. This is not the time to go for a "free ride"to the surface.

  • It is immensely helpful if the student remembers to attach the lift bag to something - preferably the line on the reel and not to the frame of the reel, prior to filling the bag with air.
  • "Murphy" says the lift bag line can and will get caught on any and all protruding pieces of scuba equipment, including but not limited to the regulator in your mouth and/or the line reel itself.
  • If at all possible, do try to keep your regulator exhaust-tee from becoming stuck in the opening of the lift bag, when exhaling to deploy the bag.
  • Do NOT set the locking mechanism on the line reel, clip the reel to your D-ring, and attempt to deploy the bag. (Kindly see reference to "air embolism simplified" ....)

This photo shows a bag being deployed. Not a bad job, but it would be helpful to get a bit more air into the bag, instead of into the ocean...

HOW TO DIVE DOUBLES:

What do you mean you're having trouble with your buoyancy? So you have never worn a set of doubles in your life, big deal. You have steel doubles with a steel back-plate, twin 51 steel deco bottles, and you are 35 pounds negative. For kripes sake, you're an Instructor! You are supposed to have excellent buoyancy - no matter what!!

<image coming soon - use your imagination>

Now hold still and quit wrecking the shot!
